Time has chosen Scribit as one of the best inventions of 2019: it is a robot artist (Italian) able to reproduce great works of art on the walls of the house.

It is an innovative project developed by the design studio Carlo Ratti Associati. Scribit – which in Latin means “writes” – is a robot artist capable of writing and painting on any vertical surface. The device is connected to the Internet and works in total autonomy. Just select the content: the plotter starts and starts to “print” by itself. In a few minutes, Scribit is able to reproduce large contents using non-toxic and eco-sustainable paints. With the same speed, the robot can delete the drawings and writings made: in this way, therefore, it is possible to change the decoration on the walls every day. Scribit was presented for the first time in Milan at the Salone del Mobile 2018, one of the most important events in the design sector. A subsequent crowdfunding campaign, launched in June 2018 to start the production of Scribit, raised 1.6 million dollars. Recently, the U.S. weekly Time included Scribit in the list of the 100 best inventions of 2019 “for its ability to bring art into every home, making it accessible to the general public.
Scribit: how works the robot that brings art into the home
Scribit can be installed in just a few minutes: all you need is two nails and a mains connection. The device can draw, erase and redraw on any surface, from the glass to the plaster of the walls of the house. The contents (graphics, drawings, writings) can be uploaded manually by the user or downloaded from the web. This means that a restaurant can “print” the menu of the day on the front door, a finance company can “post” the updates of the stock market on the walls of the room-break and every art lover can decorate the walls of the house with his favorite paintings. Changing them every day. “We are totally overwhelmed by information and spend too much time in front of a digital screen – explained Carlo Ratti, founder of CRA and director of the Senseable City Lab laboratory of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology – “Scribit offers an alternative: a robotic system that operates on any type of vertical surface, following a primordial act performed by humanity since our first rock graffiti”. Scribit is currently in production and will be on sale in early 2020.
