Design student Elvin Hu has developed an app that transforms every iPhone into the iconic Ipod Classic: the video of the demo is viral on Twitter but Apple could block its release.
Back to the past at Apple. Elvin Hu, a design student at Cooper Union College in New York City, has developed an app that allows you to “transform” every iPhone into an Ipod Classic. With its unmistakable wheel to scroll through the music library, the iPod Classic is one of the most iconic devices in Apple’s history: launched for the first time in 2001, the device was finally released on September 9, 2014. But to the delight of Apple fans, it could be back on the scene. Hu has in fact developed an app that reproduces, in all respects, the layout of the iPod Classic on the screens of the Iphone. Once the application is launched, the classic click wheel appears on the screen and “returns” the user the tactile feedback and sounds typical of the original Apple device. The app also includes a ‘cover flow’ function, i.e. a 3D graphical interface that allows you to scroll through and browse album and track covers to select the tracks you want.

Elvin Hu told the U.S. news site The Verge about his idea. I’ve been a fan of Apple products ever since I was a child,” the boy said. Before my family could afford one, I designed the layout of the iPhone user interface on the lids of Ferrero Rocher’s boxes. Their products strongly influenced my decision to choose a design course for my university career. I’ve been working on this project for more than a month and whether I can release it or not will depend on whether Apple approves it. If the release is blocked, which is likely, I could propose it as an open source project after seeing the response of the community. Within a few hours, in fact, a video in which Hu illustrates the demo of the app became viral on Twitter, getting thousands of views and comments. Tony Fadell – the designer who created the iconic iPod Classic layout – also approved the project: “It’s a nice return to the past” he tweeted in response to Hu’s video.
