Bionic contact lenses are a reality

A team of researchers from the University of San Diego have developed an innovative technology at the base of a contact lens that replicates eye movements thanks to the special elastic film that adapts well to the electrical stimuli of the brain that control the eye mechanism.

The scientific study and its developments

From the point of view of the human eye, there are many experiments using theoretical and practical methodologies and supports deriving from biotechnology and robotics. In some ways it is the case of the discovery made by a team of scientists at the University of San Diego in California, where a “bionic” contact lens was placed.

The prototype of the bionic lens is controlled by eye movements: in fact, the wearer is able to “zoom in” by simply blinking twice. It’s not science fiction, but it’s the result of an emulation technology of the human being thanks to an external implant placed on the eyes.

The objective and scientific implications of the research

The secret lies in the particular elastic film that responds to the electrical stimulations resulting from the synapses of the brain that sends the signal to the envelope that holds the eye. The main objective is the functionality of the lens through the electrical impulses directly sent by the human brain. The hope is obviously to use this technology in prosthetics, remote robotics and glasses.
