The study and discovery of the mechanism that blocks the growth of tumors
The study, supervised and coordinated by the Department of Molecular Medicine of La Sapienza in collaboration with the Bambino Gesù Children’s Hospital in Rome, was financed with Airc funds. In a purely scientific sense, the survey focuses on the Hedgehog signal.
The Hedgehog signal is essential for embryonic development and homeostasis of tissues. A key regulator of innate and adaptive anti-tumour immune responses has been identified. The mechanisms that regulate this enzyme have been investigated through comparative experiments on the Erap1 protein, the regulator mentioned above. And the results are particularly comforting as Erap1 may be the target for new cancer therapies.
The experts’ opinion
Acting on the Erap1 protein, it is possible to graft a cycle of virtuous processes that end with the blockage of tumor growth and make tumor cells “easy” targets of immune therapies.
