The Cerebras processor is estimated to be tens of times faster than the supercomputers currently in use and can represent a breakthrough for neural network simulations

A computer that can predict the future? Obviously it is a paradox but it describes well the enormous potential of this innovation. Cerebras Systems is a company specialized in the development of computer systems for machine learning. Their latest product, presented at a press conference, is the Cerebras CS-1 chip. The new chip, built on a 21 cm square surface, is housed in a computer the size of a cabinet. Its power is so high that scientists will start using it as soon as possible. The research has been published on arXiv.

The computer equipped with the Cerebras CS-1 should be at least 200 times faster than the Joule supercomputer. The supercomputer, during a combustion simulation of an engine, takes 6 milliseconds. Cerebras CS-1 succeeds to conduct the same simulation in alone 28 microseconds. The computing power is managed thanks to 84 virtual chips and 4539 cores, positioned on a single silicon surface. The arrangement allows to conduct calculations in parallel, a fundamental feature for Artificial Intelligence simulations.

What are the limits of Cerebras CS-1? The computational speed is so high that it could simulate physical processes faster than they develop in reality. The great potential can also be exploited in the construction of neural computers, computer structures that simulate the animal brain and the connections between neurons. Power plant security systems could be another possible use for Cerebras CS-1. The PC could predict possible overloads and errors, instantly simulating the evolution of the situation and predicting impending damage. The outputs provided could be critical to saving the lives of many people. It seems that we are facing an epochal turning point, we just have to wait and see the fruits of the development of future supercomputers.
