Coronavirus, server down: internet, Whatsapp e Facebook KO in Italy

The huge flow of information and content constantly updated on Coronavirus has overloaded servers throughout Italy: Internet, Facebook and WhatsApp are down in many regions.

The Coronavirus also “infects” the servers. In the last few hours, the state of emergency caused by the Covid-19 pandemic has also had important repercussions on Italy’s technological infrastructure. Already yesterday, many users have complained about line and mobile connection problems in different regions of Italy. Internet, Facebook and Whatsapp were literally knocked out for a few hours on March 12 and 13. Probably, the inefficiencies are due to the huge flow of information and content constantly updated on information sites and social networks. All this data has “burdened” the lines, resulting in server overload that has knocked out many online platforms. Even in the digital world, therefore, the Coronavirus is causing inconvenience, especially for the thousands of workers engaged in smart-working.

Italy: Internet, Facebook and WhatsApp KO

The inconvenience experienced by many users on the Internet, Facebook and Whatsapp has led telephone companies to issue press releases to clarify the situation. TIM – for example – issued an official note stating that: “the mobile network is working perfectly and with higher volumes than in the past few days. The problems, which occurred in the morning today, only affected the use of some applications and the web due to a failure on the foreign network that is being restored”. For the moment, the malfunction has affected the Internet, social networks (especially Facebook) and instant messaging systems such as Whatsapp. There are no problems with telephone lines: users can continue to make regular phone calls.
