Is there a worse situation than running out of power on your smartphone? The “Battery Low” notification is a nightmare for many people, especially those who find themselves in situations where a phone call can save their life: think of hikers, mountain climbers or professionals working in the mountains or at sea. To avoid running out of power, there are powerbanks of all shapes, sizes and colours on the market. But these devices also need to be recharged. And what happens if we don’t have a mains connection? To go beyond the limits of traditional powerbanks, Silvio de Filippis has designed and built the DTS Charger, an innovative hybrid device that recharges using alternative and unconventional energy sources. The system can run on electricity – thanks to an internal backup battery – and on solar energy through small panels on the top.

DTS charger: the powerbank that works by candles
If necessary, however, the DTS Charger can also be recharged with the heat of a fire or a couple of candles. The device is simple, easy to carry and designed especially for those who live or work in the great outdoors. If you’re hiking and get stuck in the mountains with a dead phone, you can grab some wood, light a fire, pull the DTS Charger over and recharge your smartphone in no time. The technology behind this device was invented in 1936 by Peltier but has not been further developed. The goal of the creators of the DTS Charger is to make it usable, efficient and accessible: a small step towards independence from electricity and the use of alternative energy sources.
