Jerry Can Water Filter, a new compact filter for drinking water

Jerry is a compact water filter that can be connected to a standard canister to easily provide clean drinking water

Drinking water is a commodity that we often take for granted. In fact, hundreds of millions of people do not have access to clean water sources worldwide. The WHO estimates that 1.5 million people die each year from waterborne diseases. Jerry Can Water Filter is a product that aims to solve this problem.

How does it work?

The filter consists of three distinct sections. The foam pre-filter removes larger particles such as dirt, sand and soil. The second micro membrane filter is used to eliminate bacteria and parasites. The third filter is composed of activated carbon and serves to remove chemicals and improve the taste of water. The filter is designed to fit common plastic canisters. The filter is compact and easy to transport and is designed to filter over 10000 liters of water and remove 99.99% of impurities.

Potential uses

JERRY can be applied as a cover or as a tap to the canisters already present in the house. The water is purified by passing through the filter without electricity, only thanks to the force of gravity. The large-scale production price should lower the cost to 2-3 euros each. Practicality and low cost could provide great help in emergency situations or during support missions in developed countries.

The product won the James Dyson Awards 2019, allowing the start of a start-up. The project can then undergo further evolution, aimed at improving the operation and optimizing the filters for different uses.
