“Maker Faire Rome – The European Edition” returns from 18 to 20 October

Among the many new features is an area dedicated to the potential of Artificial Intelligence systems and a tournament of robot footballers.

Rome, 3 September 2019 – A large space dedicated to the applications and potential of artificial intelligence systems will be one of the main novelties of the next “Maker Faire Rome – The European Edition” (https://2019.makerfairerome.eu) scheduled in the capital from 18 to 20 October 2019.

Italy can already boast a consolidated tradition in the field of artificial intelligence, at methodological, technological and applicative level and, in this context, the need was born to unite the forces of universities and research centres for the creation of a new national CINI Laboratory called AIIS “Artificial Intelligence and Intelligent Systems”. The laboratory aims to create the basis for an effective Italian ecosystem of artificial intelligence, including all skills and dedicated to highlighting national excellence to strengthen the scientific and technological role of Italy in Europe and worldwide.

The AIIS Laboratory of the CINI (https://www.consorzio-cini.it/index.php/it/artificial-intelligence-and-intelligent-systems) will organize a review of artificial intelligence systems as part of Maker Faire 2019. The aim is to show the general public the potential of AI systems through the model of organization on application domains, which was a great success at the recent conference Ital-IA 2019, and able to convey the importance of artificial intelligence in the development of our country and beyond.

The Maker Faire 2019 will therefore be an opportunity to introduce visitors to the potential of artificial intelligence and to feed the virtuous network of exchange and collaboration between research institutions, institutions and companies interested in the most strategic and disruptive technology of the 21st century. Artificial intelligence, in fact, is already impacting strategic sectors that characterize our lifestyle, such as medicine, technologies for wellness, aging, education and education, up to the humanities and cultural disciplines.

Among the demonstrations of artificial intelligence systems, the Maker Faire Rome will also host a triangular tournament of robot footballers “RoboCup” (www.robocup.org) starring the teams of Sapienza University of Rome and two other universities from Switzerland and Germany. A tournament in which humanoid robotic systems, completely autonomous, will compete in football matches, testing methods and techniques of artificial intelligence at the state of the art.

“Artificial Intelligence – says Daniele Nardi, professor of Artificial Intelligence at the Sapienza University of Rome and coordinator of the homonymous area of Maker Faire Rome – is a scientific challenge, which has accompanied my entire career as a researcher. In this phase, the results of the research can actually lead to the realization of systems able to contribute to the development of our society in many aspects, as emerged also from the Ital-IA conference, organized by the CINI AIIS Laboratory last March. And this is precisely the objective that the space dedicated to Artificial Intelligence systems sets itself: to show the opportunities offered by IA technologies, referring mainly to industrial systems, so as to highlight that it is not only the world of research committed to the theme of Artificial Intelligence, but that the technological transfer to the world of production is already underway”.

“The artificial intelligence area – explains Lorenzo Tagliavanti, President of the Rome Chamber of Commerce – expands and consolidates the Maker Faire Rome platform, that is, the place where Science meets innovation from below and where training, networking and business are also carried out, and thus acts as an accelerator of the innovation process for the whole of Europe. The event is also evolving thanks to the fruit of the co-creation work that we are constantly carrying out with companies, professionals and the many institutions that support us with enthusiasm. Maker Faire Rome is the event of the strategic economic sectors for a great modern country, where the best ideas and inventions that will change our lives for the better are displayed”.

National Inter-University Consortium for Information Technology (CINI): The CINI is today the main reference point for national academic research in the fields of Computer Science and Information Technology. Established on December 6, 1989, it brings together 47 Italian public universities with over 1,300 professors, the CINI is placed under the supervision of the Ministry responsible for University and Research. The Consortium promotes and coordinates scientific activities, research and transfer, both basic and applicative, in the field of computer science, in concert with the national scientific communities of reference with universities, institutes of higher education, research institutions, companies and public administration. The CINI has a network of National Laboratories distributed throughout the territory on various topics: Artificial Intelligence, Assistive Technologies, Big Data, CyberSecurity, Embedded Systems and Smart Manifacturing, Smart Cities, etc.. (https://www.consorzio-cini.it).

National Laboratory of Artificial Intelligence and Intelligent Systems (AIIS): The AIIS National Laboratory, established in June 2018, aims to create the basis for an effective Italian artificial intelligence ecosystem, inclusive of all skills and devoted to highlighting national excellence to strengthen the scientific and technological role of Italy in Europe and worldwide. The AIIS Laboratory gathers more than 890 researchers and professors from the 47 public universities of the CINI consortium, the CNR, the IIT and the Bruno Kessler Foundation. A large Italian community of researchers and university professors, which operates at the highest levels of research at national and international level in the fields of Artificial Intelligence. The research themes dealt with in the AIIS Laboratory are multiple, involving theoretical and methodological, technological and applicative aspects (https://www.consorzio-cini.it/index.php/it/labaiis-home).

Maker Faire Rome – The European Edition” is organized by Innova Camera, a special company of the Chamber of Commerce of Rome and is an event that combines business, science, technology, education, manufacturing, art, space, craftsmanship, food and agriculture by calling together the world of makers and innovators, along with companies, startups, universities and research centers.
