Maxwell’s Daemons: the shooting game that “teaches” physics and chemistry

Three researchers from the University of Sassari have created a shooting game to learn the basics of physics and chemistry in a fun way.

Learn physics and chemistry through a shooting game. This is the ambitious idea of Alberto Maria Pintus, Andrea Gabrieli and Federico Pazzona. The three researchers from the University of Sassari have conceived and developed Maxwell’s Daemons, a shooting game set in the molecular world. The plot is very simple: players are shrunk and begin an adventurous journey among atoms. The “antagonists” that you encounter in Maxwell’s Daemons are inspired by chemical compounds that really exist, and to tackle them you need to master some knowledge of chemistry and physics. At the moment, Maxwell’s Daemons is still only a beta and the authors need funds to complete their project. For this reason, on July 7 they activated a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter: the goal is to raise 35 thousand euros and launch the videogame on the Steam online platform by 2021.

Maxwell’s Daemons: the shooting game to learn physics and chemistry

Maxwell’s Daemons was conceived and developed by the three researchers in Chemistry and Physics at the University of Sassari Alberto Maria Pintus, Andrea Gabrieli and Federico Pazzona. “We want to show people the beauty we have seen in years of academic research” explains Pintus. “In every millimetre of our world – adds Andrea Gabrieli – there is an entire universe. You should just be able to shrink yourself down enough to explore it”. “We’ve noticed – explains Pazzona – that many educational videogames are devoid of attention to graphics and game dynamics. So we thought we’d create one that was a real adventure, with a rich setting and a precise atmosphere. By immersing yourself in the world of Maxwell’s Daemons, you acquire a number of basic scientific concepts in a completely intuitive way, simply because you can see them at work. In addition, a voice guide accompanies the player during the mission, explaining things in a captivating way. Our idea is that, over and above some basic knowledge that will be acquired immediately, everyone can decide the level of scientific depth of their gaming experience”.
