A club in Piazza Duomo in Milan has “hired” the first robot barman in Italy: his name is Toni and he is able to create all kinds of cocktails
The bartender is an almost mythical figure. In addition to mixing cocktails, the man behind the bar is very often a friend, guide and even confidant of his customers. From today, however, things could change. A well-known bar in Piazza Duomo in Milan has in fact hired the first “robot barman” in Italy. His name is Toni. It is an imposing robotic machine formed by two mechanical arms capable of creating all kinds of cocktails. The robot was conceived, designed and built by the company Makr Shakr. Toni can create 120 drinks per hour (1 every 30 seconds) working with the 158 bottles placed on top of its metal structure. The number of combinations is almost infinite: the designers estimate that the robotic barman can create a gogool (a whole number that can be expressed with 1 followed by one hundred zeros) of different cocktails.

Toni: the first robot barman in Italy
Toni is the first robot barman in Italy. To order, customers can use a tablet or access the drinks list through an app for IOS and Android. Also through the smartphone, you can create your own drink from scratch by choosing from as many as 158 different liqueurs. In this way, contacts with waiters and bartender are minimized and it is easier to comply with the social distancing measures imposed by the Coronavirus emergency. “After the lockdown – explain the managers of the bar in Milan who hired Toni – visitors have decreased considerably, but thanks to the robot barman, customers feel safer and more serene in the face of the risk of contagion. Do some people fear that at this rate, one day, machines will replace human labour? With the robot, the figure of the man behind the bar counter is missing, but new jobs are created for technicians who take care of maintenance, cleaning and supplying the robotic bartender”.
